Miami Woman Sexually Assaulted After Stopping With Car Problems

Monday, October 31st, 2011

The Miami Herald is reporting that a 21 year old woman has been sexually assaulted after having pulled over in her car because she was having car problems.   This is a particularly unsettling crime because of the opportunistic nature of the crime.

According to the report – the incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. this past Sunday.  An unidentified woman, who was having problems with her car, pulled off of I-95 at Northwest 103rd Street and stopped near Northwest Sixth Avenue.

According to the report – as the woman was at the front of the car, checking on the trouble, she was reportedly hit on the head and forced to the ground. The attacker punched her in the face several times and sexually assaulted her, police said.

Miami-Dade police have released a sketch of the man, shown here.

Police asked anyone with information to call Miami-Dade County Crime Stoppers at 305-471-8477.

Parents and Law Enforcement Gear Up For Halloween

Sunday, October 30th, 2011

Sex offenders across the country should watch out.  More and more local and state police are jumping in on what has been termed “Halloween round-ups” – which are essentially the governments’ attempts at keeping dangerous sex offenders off the streets  More specifically, the authorities wish to make sure that sex offenders are not using the child-centric holiday to try to lure unsuspecting trick-or-treaters into their homes.

A typical example of a round-up – can be found in Stanislaus County, California.  In an operation which has been ongoing for 17 years, police and local authorities try to help keep children safe in what is called Operation Boo.  In the operation, local state parole agents work with police to issue compliance checks on sex offenders, making sure they are staying away from children.

It may not be widely known, but in many places it is not lawful for convicted sex offenders to hand out children to children on Halloween.  In fact, because there are many “sex offender” maps available to parents online, it is advisable that parents make use of these tools and map out their routes in advance.  This will allow parents to purposefully avoid many of the wrong homes in the first place.

Parents should discuss Halloween safety tips with their children before going out trick-or-treating.  Though the authorities in many places will do their part – safety often comes down to following common sense guidelines.  Here are a few:

—Advise children to never go in a stangers home while trick-or-treating.  Most people that invite a child into their home on Halloween are good people, and just want to ask the child to wait while they go fetch candy, or other treats.  But, adults handing out candy will understand if a child politely delines to enter the home.  Tell a child to be suspicious of any adult that is too insistent that the child enter.

—Similar to the last tip, instruct children not to get into the car with strangers.

—Parents should teach reinforce instructions on how to properly cross the street and wait at intersections.

—Parents should inspect all candy and treats given to children before consumption

—For parents with older children, talk to them about resisting peer pressure.  Halloween can come with lots of drinking and drug use, especially in clubs and at parties.  Instruct your children on how to resist pressure to follow the crowd when the crowd is doing wrong.

2 Dead Bodies Found On Cruise Ship – No Foul Play Suspected

Saturday, October 29th, 2011

This past weekend g really strange happened on the Norwegian Cruise Lines ship the Dawn.  But first, how about some history?  In 2005, the ship as the ship sailed from the Bahamas to New York, where the ship calls home, the Dawn was hit by a 70 foot wave.  Think about that seventy foot – a wave almost as high as the ship itself.  Reporting at the time was chock full of all kinds of damage reports, including smashed windows, broken dishes, and frightened passengers.  But, as bad as that was, at least there were no reports of death.  But,the Dawn would not be so lucky this time.

However, this time there was no 70 foot wave.  There was just a discovery of not one – but two – dead bodies aboard the ship.  What makes this even stranger, just days before Halloween, is that the two incidences are completely separate, and are being treated as “death by natural causes” by authorities.

In both of the deaths authorities have decided not to release the names of the deceased.  So, we will suffice to simply describe the deceased.

In once of the deaths a 67 year old woman from Tiverton, Rhode Island died after succumbing to “chronic illness” according to a spokesperson for Norwegian.

In the second instance,a 23 year old, from Littleton, N.H., also died aboard the ship, though no cause of death has been issued.  What’s telling is that, in this second instance, even though police say there is no suspicion of foul play, the room was reportedly processed for evidence.

Authorities issued a statement saying “In the absence of criminal charges, not further details will be released.”

So, here is the question.  Knowing this about the Norwegian Dawn, would you be less likely to sail on this ship given its past?  Two unrelated deaths from natural causes on the same ship that had been slapped with a 70 foot wave years before?  And all this occurring just days before Halloween?

Sound off, let us know what you think.
