John H. Royal Caribbean Fails Suprise Health Inspection

Monday, December 26th, 2011

When you go on a cruise you expect the best.  You expect the best in customer services, the best in planning by the cruise line, and the best sanitation possible.  But, the truth is that often times cruise companies are found lacking in some, or all of these areas.  Though customer service is important, and planning should always be top-notch, it is hard to argue that there is ever a good excuse to have poor sanitation aboard a cruise ship.  But, Royal Caribbean, the second largest cruise line in the world, has just proved that even in an area as important as sanitation, you cannot fully trust the cruise lines.

U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) monitors boarded the Royal Caribbean ship “Monarch of the Seas” during a surprise inspection last month, and found the ship’s sanitation to be in poor condition.  The 2,390 passenger ship actually failed the surprise health inspection.

The ship was found to have dozens of sanitation violations, including dirty plates mixed in with clean plates in the buffet line, and fruit flies in the kitchen and buffet areas.

These health concerns are of particular importance, because cruise ships are already known for their closed quarters which can help lead to the spread of dangerous disease such as Norovirus.  The CDC rates its inspections on a 100 point scale, with anything less than 86 points rating as a failing grade.  The Monarch of the Seas received a score of 85.

It is important to be vigilant when choosing with which company to cruise, or whether to cruise at all.  With the uncovering of these health code violations, combined with the fact that cruise ships can be extremely dangerous places, where sexual assault, rape, and murders are far more commonplace that most people would expect, it may be wise to rethink a cruise vacation all together.
