Costa Cruise Lines Bookings Down By 1/3

Tuesday, February 28th, 2012

The news is not good for Costa Cruise Lines. After having a cruise ship sink a month an a half ago, Costa Cruise Lines has said that their booking are down by about a third. The disaster has also put pressure on other cruise carriers as well, causing them to offer steep discounts and promotions. Now, on the heels of the a second Costa cruise ship becoming deiabled at sea, the Allegra caught fire a few days ago, the industry is bracing for more woes.

The troubles faced by Costa Cruise lines serve to underscore more general issues faced by cruise line passengers everyday, problems which do not usually get very much press time. Take this quote for instance:

A disabled cruise ship will have spent an extra 10 to 12 hours at sea without electricity, air conditioning or toilet facilities because a French fishing vessel that was first to respond to the drifting cruiser refused to give way to faster tug boats, a Seychelles government official said Wednesday.

Here we have a case of further inconvenience to the passengers because Costa can’t get its act together.

Costa Allegra Disabled At Sea By On Board Fire

Monday, February 27th, 2012

The Costa cruise ship “Allegra,” carrying more than 1,000 passengers, was disabled in the Indian Ocean today by an on board fire. The ship became disabled more than 200 miles off the Seychelles island, in waters that are notorious for its pirate activity. The ship is now being towed by a fishing vessel.

Conditions aboard the ship are said to be safe, and no one was hurt in the fire, which was in a generator room.

Costa Cruise Lines is owned by Florida based Carnival Cruise Lines. In a statement the company said “The shipboard fire-extinguishing system and emergency procedures were activated promptly and special fire-fighting squads extinguished the fire.â€

For added security, several members of the Italian Navy are aboard the ship, in order to prevent any attack by pirates.

The Allegra is a 20 year old ship. It had left Madagascar on Saturday, with a scheduled stop at the port of Victoria on Tuesday. Officials say the the ship will reach land sometime Thursday.

s Cruise Passengers Get Refunds – Others Don’t

Sunday, February 26th, 2012

A recent report from local Tampa Bay channel 8, has revealed that Princess cruise lines has given a refund to some passengers which were stricken with Norovirus, and gave nothing to others. About a month ago a group of over 300 passengers, and 30 crew, were stricken with Norovirus while sailing on Princess Cruise Line’s “Crown Princess.”

The stories from the ship were horrid, including passengers violently vomiting and being quarantined to their rooms to prevent the spread of the disease. The quarantined passengers missed much of the fun, including eating at the nightly dinners, and seeing the on board shows. Despite not being allowed to eat at the nightly dinners, they were charged roughly $100 apiece in gratuity for the dinners.

At the end of the trip the passengers disembarked, and the same ship was then boarded by the next group of passengers, who set sail on the Crown Princess.

As can be imagined, many from the next group of passengers also fell ill with Norovirus. This second outbreak caused the cruise line to alter the itinerary, with the second sailing not making all the scheduled stops.

The second group was refunded at least some of their cruise fare, while the first group was not. Princess says that the refund was given because of the itinerary change.
