Anti-Norovirus Nasal Spray Under Development

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

Norovirus is a nasty gatro-intestinal illness that affects people approximately 20 million times per year in the United Sates alone. In fact, Norovirus is the number 1 cause of the so-called “stomach flu” in the U.S. The virus has been called “democratic” because it affects everyone. With symptoms including diahareea, vomiting, and general misery, there is certainly a market for a treatment. Now, scientists are closing in on a vaccine.

If everything goes well, the vaccine could be available within 5 years said Charles Arntzen, a molecular biologist at Arizona State University. However, the virus comes in more than 30 strains, and evolves quickly, casting doubt on the effectiveness of any potential vaccine.

A vaccine for Norovirus would be an important step in battling viruses in general. Though Norovirus is usually healed by the body within a day or two, approximately 70,000 people are hospitalized each year with the illness. About 800 per year, mostly elderly, die from Norovirus yearly.

Recent Cruise Headlines Underscore Hidden Risks

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Recently we have brought several different types of stories regarding cruise ships, from the sensational sinking of the Costa Concordia, to the discovery of more than 35 pounds of cocaine on a cruise ship in San Francisco a few days ago. What these stories show is something we have been saying for years – there is a hidden risk to taking a cruise, a risk that many people are just beginning to take seriously.

It is easy to point out a cruise ship sinking – taking up to 32 lives with it. It is easy to point out the 4+ cruise ship outbreaks of Norovirus in recent weeks. It is easy to point out the numerous cases of cruise ship sexual assault and disappearance that occur on a monthly basis. But, the cocaine story should really call your attention, because it is so out of the ordinary. How do you feel knowing your cruise line neighbors may be major drug dealers, using the vessel to smuggle massive amounts of drugs?

The fact is that many of these cruise ships are like floating cities. Every problem you find in any city, you are likely to find on a cruise ship, and more. The one difference is that there is often insufficient “police” on board, because it is a business, not a government.

If you chose to cruise, keep these things in mind. The companies try their hardest to give you a “wonderland” experience. But, as so many cruisers of late have found, cruising brings all the same problems as any vacation, and sometimes more.

Yet Another Norovirus Outbreak

Saturday, February 11th, 2012

The Celebrity Constellation was the latest ship in the ongoing Norovirus outbreak saga.  It returned to port today, after approximately 100 passengers and crew came down with the gastro-instesinal bug.  This comes just days after the Crown Princess, a mega-ship operated by Princess Cruise Lines, cut short a 7 day cruise after approximately 300 passengers fell ill.

According to reports from local news station WSVN, the passengers seemed to be happy with the way the crew handled the situation. There are reports that the crew acted promptly to try to stem the flow of the outbreak, including prompt cleaning of the rooms of those affected with steam cleaners.

The crew were reported have worn protective suits as they worked, causing one passenger to say “When we left they were all dressed in kind of a martian outfit with gloves and masks and coveralls. They were trying to clean every aspect of the ship.”

Cruise ship crew even went as far as serving food to passengers, apparently in the buffet line, in order to prevent the transmission of the outbreak.

This account of good service by the cruise line and its crew is certainly not the norm. However, it is pleasing to hear that they at least one company got it right, at least once.
